Maskne

What’s behind the phenomenon? How does it develop? What can be done about it?

What is Maskne?

Maskne is a compound term derived from the words mask and acne. It refers to the increased occurrence of impurities in the lower third of the face due to the currently necessary wearing of face masks. The friction of the mask against the skin causes mechanically induced acne, known as acne mechanica. This phenomenon is not new. Healthcare personnel are often affected by it. However, since the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been affecting many more people.

How exactly does Maskne develop?

Due to the unfavorable combination of heat, poor air circulation, and moisture under the mask from breathing and speaking, microorganisms can multiply particularly well and clog pores. The friction of the mask against the skin also causes microscopic injuries, which further damage the skin barrier and promote the penetration of bacteria into the skin. The result is impurities ranging from blackheads to inflamed pimples.

People who are naturally prone to impure skin and those with particularly sensitive skin are naturally more affected by this unpleasant phenomenon.
