What is Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body whose task is to store moisture. A single gram can bind up to 6 liters of water. In the skin, hyaluronic acid is synthesized by the connective tissue cells themselves. However, the body’s own hyaluronic acid production decreases more and more with increasing skin aging. This is why, by our mid-30s at the latest, we no longer have the plump, fresh skin we had as children and teenagers. The first fine lines appear around the eyes and mouth or in the cheek area, the skin loses firmness and moisture, becomes drier and less supple.
Hyaluronic acid has been used in aesthetic medicine for many years, with the aim of reversing the first signs of skin aging, stimulating the skin’s regeneration mechanisms, and giving the complexion an overall freshness boost.
What are Skin Boosters?
The company Restylane, which developed the Skin Boosters, is one of the market leaders in hyaluronic products and is known for the particular purity and high quality of its ingredients.
Restylane Skin Boosters are a special type of hyaluronic acid used for long-lasting revitalization and hydration of the superficial skin layers. Skin boosters are thus an excellent treatment if you want immediate moisturization and skin rejuvenation without changing the appearance of your facial features. Unlike classic fillers, skin boosters do not produce any significant volume effect.

What is Special about the Skin Booster Treatment
Skin Boosters contain a unique form of stabilized hyaluronic acid that is injected precisely into the middle to deep dermis in small micro-deposits using ultra-fine cannulas. They immediately improve skin quality by increasing hydration (moisturization) and skin elasticity and smoothing the skin surface. Due to the innovative formulation, the effect lasts up to 12 months, in contrast to non-stabilized hyaluronic acid.
The goal of the treatment is less about correcting deep wrinkles or replacing lost volume, but rather about long-lasting improvement in moisture supply, which results in radiant, fresh, and plump skin – the so-called glow.
Like with a “moisturizer from within”, it leads to a continuous improvement of skin quality that lasts for many months.
Skin Booster Treatment with Cannula
A special method of injecting skin boosters is the so-called cannula. This is a flexible, soft, long needle with a blunt end. With just a single insertion, larger areas of the face can be treated, which is usually more comfortable for patients. Additionally, the risk of unwanted bruising (hematomas) is further reduced.
For Which Areas are Skin Boosters Particularly Well-Suited
In addition to fine lines around the mouth, eyes, or cheek area, the neck and décolletage are also good areas to treat with skin boosters. The skin looks significantly younger and is supple and soft again. You radiate again.
The skin booster treatment is suitable for all ages and skin types and is very well tolerated.
Combination Possibilities of Skin Boosters
Skinboosters can be combined with other therapies such as microneedling and PRP, allowing you to enjoy the benefits of both methods and experience continuous improvement in skin texture – consult with the practice for advice on this. Of course, combinations with other minimally invasive aesthetic treatments such as hyaluronic fillers, peelings, or Botox are also possible.

How does the Skinbooster treatment proceed
After thorough cleansing and disinfection of the skin, the injection of the Skinbooster is performed using micro-fine needles into the skin. Alternatively, larger areas are treated fan-like with flexible blunt cannulas through only a single entry point.
If needed and at the patient’s request, a local anesthetic cream can be applied to the skin beforehand. However, Skinbooster therapy is not particularly painful even without numbing cream.
In the following 2-3 days, strong sun exposure, sauna, or solarium should be avoided.
How many Skinbooster treatments are needed
Although significant results are visible after just one Skinbooster treatment, a treatment course with a total of 2-3 build-up treatments at 4-week intervals is usually recommended, followed by a refresher every six months.
Hyaluronic acid in cosmetics as an alternative?
There are many cosmetic creams on the market that advertise hyaluronic acid as an ingredient. However, the problem here is that the hyaluronic acid cannot be introduced into the depths of the skin because the molecules are too large to fit between the cells. The effect of these creams is rather based on a short-term swelling of the epidermis (uppermost skin layer), which temporarily smooths out tiny wrinkles. However, the result is not permanent; you need to reapply after a few hours to maintain the effect. Thus, such cosmetics are certainly a useful accompanying therapy, but in their effect by no means comparable to Skinboosters.
In contrast, the hyaluronic acid contained in the Skinbooster reaches exactly where it is actually needed due to the injection with a micro-cannula. Due to the special chemical preparation, the hyaluronic acid remains there for 6-12 months, so that the corresponding result also lasts for this duration.
Hyaluronic acid for ingestion as an alternative?
Preparations with hyaluronic acid for ingestion are broken down into their individual components in the digestive tract and then absorbed. Unfortunately, we cannot ‘tell’ the body where to deposit the hyaluronic acid that is rebuilt from this, just as we unfortunately cannot choose where we want to lose fat first during a diet and where we preferably don’t want to lose any at all.
With the Skinbooster treatment, on the other hand, the hyaluronic acid ends up exactly where you want it, in your skin.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Skinbooster Treatment
How long does the Skinbooster treatment take?
The Skinbooster therapy itself takes about 15-25 minutes, depending on the region; if a numbing cream is desired beforehand, it needs to take effect for another 15-20 minutes.
What are the side effects of Skinbooster therapy?
As a side effect, small bruises may occur, which usually subside within a few days. Very rarely, allergic reactions to the components of the Skinboosters are possible.
For a few days, you can feel the small hyaluronic acid deposits in the superficial skin layers, but this is not visible from the outside and the phenomenon disappears after a few days.
In general, it can be said that the Skinbooster treatment is very well tolerated by most patients.
Do Skinboosters also help with acne scars?
Unfortunately, acne scars are very persistent and are often perceived as very disturbing by those affected. Especially in combination with other treatments such as microneedling and PRP, skin boosters can help improve the appearance of acne scars. However, the acne scars cannot completely disappear through skin booster treatments.
Which skin booster is the best?
There are now several very good providers on the market that produce high-quality products. Personally, I prefer working with Restylane skin boosters for individual facial areas and with Profhilo when I want to treat the entire face at once.
How long does a skin booster last?
This partly depends on personal metabolism.
Initially, for Restylane skin boosters, 2 to 3 treatments at intervals of about 4 weeks are recommended. After that, the result lasts for up to 12 months for most patients before a refresher is needed.
In the case of Profhilo, a special skin booster with unique flow properties, 2 treatments 4 weeks apart are recommended, and the result lasts an average of 6 to 9 months.
Can skin boosters only be used on the face?
Skin boosters can also be applied to the neck, décolleté, or hands, anywhere where skin hydration is desired without simultaneous volume increase.
Am I socially presentable after treatment with skin boosters?
Occasionally, small bruises may occur during the skin booster treatment, but these can be easily covered with makeup and disappear after a few days.
You can resume your usual daily activities immediately after the treatment. However, it is recommended to avoid saunas, steam baths, tanning beds, and local heat applications for a few days. You should also wait about a week to ten days before getting facial massages and cosmetic treatments.
When should skin boosters not be used?
Although treatment with skin boosters is very well tolerated, there are certain contraindications, as with any medical application. I will discuss with you whether you are suitable for the skin booster treatment in a detailed consultation.
Reasons why one cannot undergo a skin booster treatment include, for example:
-
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
-
Certain autoimmune diseases
-
Treatment with anticoagulant medications
-
Taking aspirin or other antipyretic or pain-relieving medications in the last 10 days
What is better, Profhilo or the skin booster treatment?
Profhilo and the Restylane skin booster treatment have some similarities. Both methods increase the moisture content of the skin and give the complexion a fresh boost. But there are also some small differences. I personally prefer Profhilo when the goal is to provide moisture to the entire face with just a few injections. Then Profhilo acts like a generous moisture mask from within. The skin booster treatment, on the other hand, is my favorite when it comes to treating certain regions particularly intensively, for example, the cheeks or the fine lines around the upper lip.
